Evaluation of GEF Support to High GEF Recipient Countries

Among the most prominent middle-income countries in terms of their population and GDP, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa together represent 19% of the global GDP. Over the last two decades these countries have become increasingly important global economic and geopolitical actors. These five countries are among the largest GEF recipient countries, hence they are critical for the achievement of the objectives of the global environmental conventions. This evaluation will examine the forms and extent to which GEF support to these five GEF recipient countries has evolved in ways that build on their emergent capacities. The evaluation will also seek to identify additional opportunities to support these countries to build better and greener in the recovery years ahead.
