Mitsuaki Hirai is an Evaluation Officer at the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Independent Evaluation Office. He is a public health professional with over 10 years of experience in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), global health, and monitoring and evaluation. Prior to joining GEF, he worked for UNICEF where he conducted WASH and health project monitoring, led knowledge management activities, and published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles to inform evidence-based programming in Zimbabwe and Somalia. Previously, he also completed a two-year evaluation fellowship at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on global health program monitoring and worked for Village Hopecore International as a Global Health Fellow. He holds a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from George Washington University, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from UCLA School of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Soka University of America.
